Case Study Bruce – Now In Employment

Bruce's Story

Bruce is a Yarlington Housing resident who made contact with Inspired to Achieve for support, he was subsequently referred onto the Positive People programme.

Bruce hasn’t worked since 1996 due to a back condition and is in receipt of ESA. Bruce joined the Positive People programme in 2017 with aspirations of having his own business making ukuleles. He identified that after 21 years unemployment he could undertake a craft sitting down, plus he is a keen ukulele player. Bruce required training to support his aspiration.

After research the nearest course was identified at South Thames College, Surrey, one of the few places in the UK where the highly specialist craft can be learnt. Bruce was keen and eager to enrol with the course but was not eligible for an ‘Adult learner loan’ and with limited income he was unable to finance the travel (244 miles round trip) for the course.

Positive People agreed to fund the fuel costs for Bruce. This has enabled him to enrol and start a L1 Guitar making and repair course.
Bruce is currently applying for a bursary to see if he can fund the travel, if not it has been agreed Positive People will support his travel for the duration of the one year course.

Without Positive People Bruce would not be able to pursue his dream of learning how to make musical instruments or work towards career aspirations (and a return to the labour market) of being self employed.

Upon completion of the level 1 course Bruce hopes he will be able to progress to Level 2 whilst starting to make ukuleles and generating an income.

Bruce said “After spending 18 months trying to persuade the Job Centre to help me onto this course, with no success, an hour-long interview was all it took for ‘Inspired to Achieve’ to agree to help! The course is everything I wanted and more!!! Just shows that if you want something enough, and keep knocking on doors, eventually someone will open a door and help!!”
